This will not be a good weekend for Michael Mukasey, whose chances of being confirmed as the next attorney general continue to grow more slim.
Sen. Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today said he will vote against the candidate on Tuesday.
Leahy, like several other committee members, based his decision on Mukasey’s unwillingness to call “waterboarding” – pouring water over a bound person’s head to simulate drowning – a form of torture.
“No American should need a classified briefing to determine whether waterboarding is torture,” Leahy said today. He plans a news conference later today.
